Finn Juhl was born on the 30th January 1912 in Frederiksberg, Denmark.
Although trained in architecture, it was his modern furniture designs that made him an international name. His first pieces of furniture were designed for his own apartment and were manufactured by the young Danish carpenter, Niels Vodder.
In 1946 Juhl got his first major interior assignment at Bing and Grøndahl’s store at Amagertorv in Copenhagen. This later became one of his main works and was awarded with the Eckersberg Medal in 1947. Soon after, he was given the opportunity to help furnish the new headquarters of the United Nations in NY - something which established his name with the American audience.
He is most famous today for his iconic furniture designs including the Chieftan Armchair, the Baker Sofa and the Finn Juhl Sideboard which are now produced by the House of Finn Juhl.Baker Sofa
Made-to-Order, 12 weeks
Regular price £1,535.00 Save Liquid error (product-template line 120): -Infinity%Our elegant reproduction winged Finn Juhl baker sofa brings subtle modern style to any spaces. Its unique split back is crafted from moulded plywood frame, padded in comfortable high-density foam and finished with luxurious cashmere. The dark walnut veneer legs support and finish this handsome seating piece.
The Baker Sofa demonstrates Finn Juhl's sculptural abilities. The sofa, like his Model 45 Chair, exposes the beautifully crafted wood frame by pulling the upholstery free. In this particular piece, the result is a floating effect. The base and legs are so slender and delicate and the seat of the sofa protrudes slightly beyond the wood base edges so that it seems just lightly placed. The back upholstery piece being slightly above the seat base makes the entire sofa feel less massive and looks as though it's hovering above.
The separation of these pieces allows air to pass through the space and the slender legs allow air to pass beneath, so the entire piece really integrates into any space rather than creating a separation of space. The visual interest, traditional craftsmanship combined with new, clean, and surprising use of lines and mass all combine to draw one toward it and truly walk around it, look at it from all angles, and interact with it as if it were a sculpture. It is not a sculpture; it is a sofa with sculptural qualities and ultimately it is just as functional and comfortable as it is beautiful.

DIMENSIONS (cm)
When you look at the graceful shapes and sensual curves of Finn Juhl’s work, you may be shocked to realize that he designed these pieces 60 to 70 years ago. A pioneering force in his own country, Finn Juhl is also credited, along with fellow Danes Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Borge Mogensen and Poul Kjaerholm, with introducing Danish modern to midcentury America.
Juhl considered himself an architect of the interior as well as the exterior. He began designing furniture like the Poet Sofa (1941) for use in his own home, located north of Copenhagen. Juhl felt that furniture, handicraft and art should create a completeness of the house, which in his case was decorated with works by the Danish painters of the time. Today, the Finn Juhl House – an early example of open-plan design with views to its garden from every room – is part of the Ordrupgaard Museum.
In 1937, Juhl began collaborating with master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, and the pair was the buzz of the 1945 Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibition with their expressive, sculptural pieces. One such item was the Model 45 Armchair (1945), which broke from tradition by freeing the upholstered areas from the wood frame.

Chieftains Sofa
Made-to-Order, 12 weeks
Regular price £1,585.00 Save Liquid error (product-template line 120): -Infinity%M-Edition's reproduction of the Chieftains an icon of Danish furniture, and bears all the hallmarks of Finn Juhl's inspired approach to design. A modern take on the colonial chair, the Chieftain draws its inspiration from art, customs, and weaponry from foreign shores. Its shield-like back and comfortable low seat appear to almost float in the space between the hardwood frame, maintaining its visual lightness.
The Chieftain sofa was designed in 1949 and first presented at the Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition. Whilst the Chieftain Chair went on to wider production, the sofa displayed at the exhibition was the only known example to exist until the relaunch of this rare piece.

Finn Juhl Sideboard
Made-to-Order, 12 weeks
Regular price £1,265.00 Save Liquid error (product-template line 120): -Infinity%Add colour to your mid-century modern theme with this iconic credenza originally created in 1955. This meticulously crafted walnut reproduction is exacting in construction detail and colour hue to the original. Two large cool-tone doors slide on base tracks concealing the ample interior storage space. When the doors are pulled completely shut they conceal 6 blue colour graduating side drawers. The original 1955 design of the drawers is based on Johan Wolfgang von Goethe’s internationally recognized colour circle. Finn Juhl’s Sideboard is widely considered the icon on modernist storage options.
At the time of its origin, this timeless design was part of a theme of cubist wood sideboards that hovered over thin shapely steel frames with actual wood feet. Introduce a sense of whimsical modernism to any theme from mid-century to loft modern. The Sideboard embodies all of the quality features but is priced significantly less than the original design.
