A master in Italian architecture, Gio Ponti is renowned across the world for his epic contribution to the world of design. Founder of the architecture and design magazine Domus, Ponti also helped to create the prestigious Compasso d'Oro design award and was a strong supporter of the Triennale di Milano.
Graduating with a degree in architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 1921, Gio Ponti began his career working as an architect alongside Mino Fiocchi and Emilio Lancia. Originally inspired by the neoclassical Novecento Italiano movement, Ponti went on to design iconic buildings such as the Pirelli Skyscraper in Milan and the Denver Art Museum in Colorado, in collaboration with a host of other renowned architects. Ahead of their time and incredibly innovative, Ponti’s architectural creations are still widely celebrated.
Turning his skilled hand to the world of furniture design, Gio Ponti’s love of innovation, quality and expert craftmanship led him to create icons such as the Uovo Table Lamp and the Superleggera Chair. Minimalist yet incredibly functional, Ponti threw a prototype of the Superleggera Chair from a four-storey building and was only satisfied when it landed intact. Collaborating with esteemed manufactures, Ponti’s contemporary designs remain incredibly popular today.
